Smart Chemistry Smart Future
The essential contribution of the
chemical industry to society
Smart Chemistry Smart Future is a unique event focused on the contributions of the Chemical Industry to society and incorporates a full schedule of activities, which includes a totally exclusive exhibition based on 4 core themes which demonstrate the enormous capacity of chemistry to improve and change our world through innovative solutions to the major challenges we face today.
Smart Chemistry Smart Future will highlight the strategic role of the chemical industry in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals
The chemical sector, as a leading RDI industry, plays a key role as a facilitator of innovations and pioneering technologies to meet society’s demands and achieve the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) set by the UN for 2030. This will be made evident at Expoquimia 2020, Fira de Barcelona’s International Chemistry Event devoted to the sector, which will be held from 14-17 September 2021.
Under the slogan “Welcome to 2030”, the project’s focal point will be an exclusive exhibition at which the leading organisations and companies attending will showcase the cutting-edge technological breakthroughs and innovations with the greatest development potential over the next ten years. The sector in Spain is already working on these to overcome the main challenges facing us as a society in the four major areas of Sustainable Development, namely the Circular Economy, Energy Transition and Climate Change, Health and Food and Digitisation and Industry 4.0 (Smart Digital Solutions).

#1 Innovative chemistry
Chemical innovation’s contribution to a sustainable future
Circular Economy / Energy Transition and Climate Change / Health and Nutrition / Smart Digital Industry
Circular economy
The chemical sector promotes the efficient use of resources through its products, materials, processes and services by providing alternative raw materials (including those of a biological origin), developing bioproducts and the reuse, recycling and recovery of waste products throughout the value chain, thereby contributing to the Circular Economy. The subjects covered will include: chemical recycling, the bioeconomy, CO2 capture and conversion to be used as a raw material as well as water management, treatment and reuse.
#2 Sound and sustainable economics
The chemical sector’s contribution to the economy for a sustainable future
Wealth Generation / Generation of Stable and Quality Employment / Innovating Driving Force / Internationalisation and Attracting Investment
Wealth generation
The chemical industry generates 13.4% of the industrial GDP and is the second-largest exporter in the Spanish economy.
